Heavy infection may cause protracted diarrhea with symptoms suggestive of malabsorption. Light infections are usually asymptomatic but are probably capable of causing disease if the host's resistance falls. Some human infections have been shown to be derived from animals via mountain streams and other sources, but most are transmitted by human sewage in public water supplies.
