A clavichord not having an independent string for each "key", the tangents of groups of two or three adjacent keys attacking the same string at suitable points in its length.
Note :
A fretted (gebunden) clavichord./By striking/one of its strings/ in different places with the tangent, different pitches are obtained. Thus one string can serve for several keys of the keyboard, reducing the total amount of tension that must be sustained by the case.
