First it attempts to reduce the problem space by applying constraints that it either knows itself or are entered by the user. Then it generates hypotheses that fit the evidence within this constrained problem space (using a procedure called CONGEN). Next it simulates the effect that each suggested structure would have if subject to mass spectroscopy and quantifies the degree of match with the original sample. Finally, it produces a ranked list of possible molecular structures.
