Chauffage de combustibles bitumineux en l'absence d'air, à une température comprise entre 450 et 600 °C environ, en vue d'extraire les produits de décomposition gazeux et liquides, de sorte que l'on obtient du gaz primaire, du goudron primaire et du semi-coke.

The heating of bituminous fuel in the absence of air to a temperature of 500 to 800 °C with recovery of low-temperature carbonisation/distillation gas, low-temperature tar and low-temperature coke or semi-coke.
Note :
In French and German speaking countries the heating temperatures are around 600 °C for hard coal, 400-600 °C for brown coal, 350-550 °C for peat.
