An eight-carbon alcohol having primary, b.p. 195 °C (383 °F), and secondary b.p. 178 °C (352 °F), isomeric forms (C8H17OH). It is characterized by a strong and fragant oder which makes it useful as a solvent in the perfume industry. The straight-chain nature of the molecule gives it good demulsifying and wetting power. Octyl alcohol (or octanol) also finds use the manufacture of cosmetics and plasticizers.
Note :
It is often referred to in the trade literature as capryl alcohol, but this term is not accepted by chemists.
