In a crop or stand, the progressive reduction of space between crowns as they spread laterally, increasing the canopy density.
Notes :
A canopy (and therefore the crop or stand) in which the individual crowns are nearing general contact with one another (horizontal closure) or whose crown cover is doing so (vertical closure) is termed a close canopy; and having achieved contact, a "closed (= complete, continuous, full) canopy", whatever the shade density of the individual crowns may be.
So long as the canopy is not closed, the trees are generally considered to be "free growing" (= free-to-grow [USA], open growing).Terme :
- canopy closure
Antonyms : canopy opening up, canopy opening-up, opening up of canopy, opening-up of canopy.
Terme associé :
- crown closure désuet
Crown closure is more properly termed crown thickening, (antonym thinning) in terms of both depth and the closer growth of branches and foliage, which together determine its over-all density.
